About The CST

Welcome to The Centre for Sustainable Transportation

The Centre for Sustainable Transportation is a membership-based, non-profit organization that facilitates best practices for the movement of people and goods over the long-term.

We bridge academic, business, and public interest to identify and help craft winning transportation solutions that benefit society and the environment while enhancing mobility.

Transportation is linked to all aspects of modern life. Our natural environment, economic prosperity, and social wellbeing are dependent on transportation systems that are clean, efficient, and equitable. Current transportation trends are unsustainable; they threaten our environment, economy, and social future. Altering these trends is not an easy task and requires the cooperation of all stakeholders including manufacturers, corporations, government officials, and individuals.

The CST is able to connect stakeholders and facilitate real-world change by:

  • Educating and raising awareness on the need for sustainable transportation through our publications and education materials for students and transportation professionals and through seminars, curriculum development and conferences,
  • Filling gaps through research by developing a consensus-based national sustainable transportation research framework and agenda to generate hard information and analysis to be used by senior level public and private sector decision makers, and by developing and testing an array of public policy instruments they can use to move toward more sustainable transportation systems, including performance measurements, and
  • Providing leadership in strategic directions on areas related to the movement of goods and people, such as achieving Canada's Kyoto targets, workforce transition, and the future of the freight transportation industry, labelling, and certification.

The Centre is internationally recognized for drafting the definition of sustainable transportation and has developed respected relationships with key international researchers and decision-makers.

We assist decision-makers in making appropriate choices on how transportation systems are planned and delivered. We are a membership-based organization that welcomes supporters from all parts of Canada and beyond.
