Current Research Projects

The Centre for Sustainable Transportation actively advances our mandate of promoting sustainable transportation. We do this through independent, academic research on a variety of topics including demand and policy measures, new technologies and planning processes, and through innovative applied research projects. We abide by the Guidelines for Research Ethics in the Social Sciences, Law and the Humanities as outlined by the National Committees for Research Ethics in Norway.

Blue Mountain Project

The CST installed 10 OttoView systems in vehicles at Blue Mountain resort in Collingwood, Ont. from Aug. 27 to Aug. 28, 2009. The units are built in Winnipeg by Persen Technologies Inc., who accompanied the CST to Blue Mountain.

This project will measure fuel economy and driving behaviour. The CST will compare the collected data from the medium and light-duty vehicles used for everyday operations on the resort with the fuel economies published by manufacturers.

This project is funded by Natural Resources Canada with support from My Sustainable Canada.

The next proposed phase of this project will include a fleet management and driver education program specific to resort vehicle operators. More information to follow.

ecoDriver Manitoba

The CST is recruiting volunteers for the GPS-based component of ecoDriver Manitoba, a component of the Drive Green Manitoba project. We're looking for 20 people who want to learn how changing their driving habits and vehicle maintenance practices can reduce the effects of driving on the environment and their pocketbook.

The CST will outfit volunteers' personal vehicles with unique, Manitoba-made GPS based OttoView systems, leased from Persen Technologies Inc. The devices will measure fuel economy, trip costs, driving habits and emissions. Volunteers will attend three educational sessions to learn green driving and maintenance tips. Before each session, the CST will collect data from the OttoView and calculate changes or improvements from the ecodriving sessions.

The program runs from September to February and is a joint initiative funded by Natural Resources Canada and the Province of Manitoba. It is coordinated by Green Manitoba.

PLEASE NOTE: Volunteer opportunities for the ecoDriver Manitoba study have ended. All volunteer applicants will be notified of their status by Wednesday, Sept. 9. To receive notification of upcoming CST volunteer opportunities, email cstinfo@uwinnipeg.ca.

To more information, visit our ecoDriver Manitoba page, email ecodrivermb@uwinnipeg.ca or call the CST at (204) 988-7182.

OttoCYCLE

Just imagine - bike lanes, parking, and other improvements right where cyclists need it most!

The CST, with funding from the City of Winnipeg, is offering Winnipeg cyclists the opportunity to track their cycling routes. Between May and October 2009, volunteers will use a GPS device called Otto for two weeks to record their cycling trips.

Data from about 900 cyclists will be collected and analyzed by the CST. This information will be used by the City of Winnipeg to determine where to build potential cycling infrastructure, a part of the city's Active Transportation Network.

To sign up for a two-week block, email ottocycle@uwinnipeg.ca or call (204) 899-2453 with your name, email address and phone number.

Kids on the Move: Child and Youth Friendly Land Use and Transport Planning

NEWLY PUBLISHED DOCUMENTS AVAILABLE IN PUBLICATIONS: Research and Studies.

Guidelines and Literature Review

What began as a study in Halton and Peel Ontario has developed into a cross-Canada series that focuses on the transportation needs of children and youth when developing community plans.

This project has taken CST’s research associates Dr. Richard Gilbert and Dr. Catherine O’Brien to eight provinces to engage with stakeholder, present their findings and develop planning guidelines specific for each unique region.

The Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) is the first organization to recommend adopting these guidelines with a public Call to Action to all Ontario municipalities.

"If we can build a successful city for children we will have a successful city for all people.

-- Enrique Peñalosa, former mayor of Bogotá, Colombia
