With an OttoCycle Project in your area, you can:
- Know where, when and how citizens are cycling in your area.
- Make the most of your active transportation budget.
- Understand cyclist in your area.
- Build cycling infrastructure that cyclists want and that encourages safer, more frequent cycling.
The OttoCYCLE project allows the City of Winnipeg to see where citizens are currently cycling and how we can improve bikeway infrastructure to make cycling easier, safer and more accessible for all Winnipeggers.

OttoCycle: Overview
The OttoCycle project was initiated by The Centre for Sustainable Transportation (CST) at The University of Winnipeg to help local decision-makers, urban planners and active transportation advocates understand where, when and how citizens cycle.
When Winnipeg OttoCycle participants were asked in the survey if they would cycle more if better infrastructure was in place, 89% of participants indicated they would.
Using Otto-driving companion™ devices from local Winnipeg development firm, PERSENTECH, the CST recruited over 900 volunteers to cycle with a device for a two-week period. Between 40 and 100 devices circulated between participants from May 1, 2009 to October 31, 2009.
In addition to the GPS-data collected from the Otto devices, participants completed a one-day trip diary and a survey. The survey collected demographic information, cycling preferences and barriers, financial cycling commitments and willingness to pay/willingness to be compensated.
With this collective data, the CST was able to provide a series of maps, graphs and reports to provide to councillors and active transportation planners at the City of Winnipeg.
