Bike Shorts Film Festival & Bike Shorts in Memory of Tim Hunt

Distracted Driving Summit, US Department of Defence

September 30 - October 1, 2009. Washington, D.C., USA

The U.S. Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood, hosted this two day summit into the dangers of driving while distracted. Representatives from law enforcement, education, government, safety advocacies and others addressed the consequences and threats to texting and talking on hand-held devices and other distraction while controlling a vehicle.

Car Free Day

Join the CST for the festivities on Albert Street between Mcdermot to Bannatyne on Tuesday, Sept. 22 for the 2009 Car Free Day.

Walk, cycle or move on down in a non-motorized vehicle and celebrate active transit!  Take part in the Track Stand Competition, Square Dancing and Street Hockey activities running from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Liberal Policy Conference

CST executive director, Arne Elias, is an invited presenter at the Manitoba provincial Liberal Policy Conference at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre on Saturday morning, Sept. 26, 2009. Arne will join two other speakers, including city councillor Mike Pagtakhan and Chris Lorenc from Heavy Construction Association, on a panel discussion sustainability. The conference will help the party understand the issues important to Manitobans and help set policies. As an apolitical organization, the CST is happy to work with all parties and organizations to further sustainable transportation.

NASCO Regional Meeting

North America's SuperCorridor Coalition Inc. hosted a regional meeting for its members from the Canadian prairies, including Manitoba, and northern USA. Executive director, Arne Elias attended to discuss the specific needs and demands for transportation in this region.

Ciclovia

September 13, 2009. Winnipeg, Manitoba

In a celebration of active transportation, the north side of Broadway, from Main St. to Osborne Ave., was dedicated cyclists, skateboarders, bladers, walkers, joggers and all other forms of non-motorized transportation.

The Centre for Sustainable Transportation is proud to have been involved in Ciclovia and represented at the event. Representatives from the CST have volunteered by attending planning meeting, provided direction, ideas and support since this initiative began. Also, CST staff members volunteered as block captains and in other capacities that lead to the success of this premier event.

The CST presents to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC)

Three Countries. One Environment.

July 23-24, 2009. Denver, Colorado

"We must build our trade and transportation systems as if we plan on staying here and engage in honest debate," said Arne Elias, CST Executive Director.

Elias presented on the future of long-haul freight and transportation corridors, including inland ports at the Sixteenth Regular Session of the CEC Council and Meeting of the Joint Public Advisory Committee in Denver, Colorado on June 24. He emphasized the need to consider behaviour, technology and infrastructure when  implementing change.

Audience members included Lisa P. Jackson, Administrator, US Environmental Protection Agency, Mauricio Limón, Mexican Undersecretary for Management of Environmental Protection, Dale Eisler, Canadian Consul General in Denver and Adriana Nelly Correa, JPAC Chair.


The CEC is an international organization with representative from the US, Mexico and Canada established to protect the environment and enforce the environmental provisions of the North American Free Trade agreement (NAFTA).

Child and Youth-Friendly Land Use and Transport Planning Guidelines Workshop

February 11, 2009. The University of Winnipeg, Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Centre hosted a workshop to discuss guidelines on the affects of transportation and land-use planning on children. The CST’s research associates, Dr. Richard Gilbert and Dr. Catherine O’Brien presented on the development of the Manitoba guidelines and the dissemination of the Ontario guidelines.

Students from Argyle Alternative High, together with Manitoba Environmental Health Network, presented their suggestions as youth consultants on the project. Honourable Kerri Irving-Ross, Minister of Healthy Living; Minister Responsible for Healthy Child Manitoba, opened the workshop.

Catherine O'Brien to Speak at Millennium Library
